Psychology of weight loss and dieting article

Weight loss programme overview
This mindchanging seminar teaches you how to change your mind about dieting and manage your strong emotions. If you've wondered why you haven’t been able to lose weight or keep it off, this programme provides answers.

Not just focusing on your thoughts and beliefs, it teaches ways to manage emotions (extremely important if emotional eating is a problem) and changes you can make to your environment to make it less likely that you’ll eat takeaways or other convenience foods.

Think of the confidence and belief in yourself you could have by using psychological knowledge to move towards your goals.  And the best part is that once you’ve mastered these methods for weight loss, you can apply them in other areas of life! Sign up for our one day seminar here!

Is this programme for you?
Can you identify with these statements?

  • You have tried a number of diets and they haven’t worked in the long term?
  • You do well on a diet to start with, then find yourself giving up?
  • You stick to your diet when you’re feeling good but you reach for sweets when you’re not?
  • You experience strong cravings that stay around until you eat forbidden   food?
  • You struggle with the unfairness that some people don’t have to worry about   their weight while you do?

If you answered yes to one or more of these statements, change your mind about dieting is for you.  If you want a long term weight loss solution and you’re willing to try something different, you’ve found the right programme.

How the 'change your mind' programme is different
Change your mind is different from most weight loss solutions because it does not focus on food.

Sure, food is important, but our experience teaches us that unless people examine why they overeat and reach for comfort food, and then use skills to combat these patterns, it doesn’t matter what food plan they are on.

Change your mind
teaches you how to master your emotional state which while important for eating, can be used in many other areas of life too.

Who is running it?
'Change your mind' groups are run by Dr. Mary Grogan and Dr. Christina Birkin, both clinical psychologists in Auckland. They started this programme when they realised the number of clients they saw who experienced difficulties with food or dieting who were missing out on vital psychological information about their behaviour patterns, thinking styles and environmental cues.

'Change your Mind' dates and times

There are no further groups scheduled at this stage but there is a full day seminar at the University of Auckland scheduled for 13th March 2010 covering most of the topics above. To enrol click here.
