About health psychology

Research consistently shows the important relationship between physical health and emotional wellbeing (how you feel). Adjustment to a newly diagnosed health condition, managing an existing one, or making lifestyle changes, can all be challenging and take a toll on our emotional resilience.

The domain of health psychology has been developed in response to these issues. Health psychologists support people to adjust to changes in their physical health, learn ways to manage their condition, and cope with the emotional impact of illness.

What can health psychologists help with?

  • Coping with illness and the distress of diagnosis including irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and other health conditions
  • Coping with grief, loss and fears about the future
  • Support with making changes to lifestyle (weight loss, increasing physical activity, smoking cessation …etc)
  • Management of panic, anxiety and worry
  • Management of symptoms of depression and low mood
  • Treatment of body image concerns
  • Dealing with sleep problems
  • Working through relationship problems and issues with sexuality and intimacy
  • Difficulties with treatment and side effects (fatigue, nausea, pain, fear of needles …etc )
  • Self-management of medications
